Ibex in the Sierra de las Nieves - Return to Listing
Ibex in the Sierra de las Nieves
A mature female Spanish ibex photographed in the Sierra de las Nieves underneath the branches of the endemic Ronda fir or pinsapo (Abies pinsapo Boiss.). The pinsapo is a relic conifer only to be found in the three highest parts of the Serranía de Ronda. The Sierra de las Nieves was declared a Natural Park and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve to protect the pinsapos, the large number of ibex (more than 1000) and another relic forest, of Montane Portuguese oaks (Quercus faginea ssp alpestris), as well as some magnificent limestone scenery. The Sierra de las Nieves is the highest part of the Serranía de Ronda (maximum 1919 metres, also the summit of western Andalusia) — explore it with Benamonarda's programme 'Natural Parks of the Serranía'. You can see another wood of pinsapos (uniquely growing on peridotite) with us during our 'Nature Rambles—Serranía de Ronda', and ibex on several Benamonarda holidays, including 'Roof of Iberia', 'Moorish Kingdom of Granada' and 'Cazorla-Segura Natural Park'.
