Springtime in the Monarda valley - Return to Listing
Springtime in the Monarda valley
One of the footpaths round Jubrique, showing a sample of the spring flowers. The Monarda, from which our association 'Benamonarda' takes its name ['bena' = tribe or family of], is a tributary of the River Genal, an area of uniquely wooded landscapes in a complex mosaic of natural Mediterranean forest (maritime pine, cork oak, Portuguese oak, nettle-tree...) and orchard trees (olive, almond [on the photo], cherry, citrus, walnut and above all, chestnut). The Genal produces the earliest and biggest chestnuts in Europe; they are the main source of income of many of the families of the 15 villages of the valley, being sold mostly through cooperatives. Walk on this and similar paths with our holidays around Jubrique: 'Genal Valley', 'Natural Parks of the Serranía', 'Nature Rambles—Serranía de Ronda', 'At Home in the Genal Valley' and 'Self-guided walking in the Genal'.
