Garrovillas (Extremadura)
The lovely plaza mayor [main square] of the village of Garrovillas in Extremadura. The arcade or portico is typical of Spanish market squares, the market stalls being set up under the shelter of the soportales [arcades] which were divided into sections with names according to the produce sold: soportales del pan [bread], soportales de la carne [meat], etc. In Garrovillas many of the arcades date from the 15th century and are now delightfully askew! See Garrovillas and other picturesque villages of Extremadura with Benamonarda programmes 'Relaxing Zafra', 'Vía de la Plata', 'Sierras of Extremadura' and 'Sierra de Guadalupe', as well as 'Relaxing Almagro' (Manchegan villages). Notice the storks' nests on the church tower. Extremadura is the most important region of Spain for nesting storks (there are more than 8000 pairs) as well as being one of the best regions for raptors. The Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) is the king of Spain's skies! You can see them on most Benamonarda holidays. For the elusive lammergeier choose our 'Aragon-Ebro' programme and for black vultures 'Sierras of Extremadura'. For lesser kestrels we recommend 'Pata Negra', and for storks 'Pata Negra', 'Relaxing Zafra', 'Sierras of Extremadura' or 'Vía de la Plata'.
