Miravet Cherry Festival Print E-mail
Holiday focus Spain

Els Canterers rural guesthouse is located in the village of Miravet, nestled beside the River Ebro in the province of Tarragona. The landscape surrounding the village is beautiful and flourishes with fruit trees during the spring and summer season; cherries, apricots, plums and peaches give this county it’s well-deserved name of "The land of the sweet fruits". The house has undergone a complete renovation in 2008 and offers comfortable surroundings and a personal service for its guests.

One of the main annual fruit crops here is the cherry, with trees blossoming during the early months of the year and the fruit harvest season starting at the beginning of May through to June. On the 14th of June 2009 the village will be celebrating it’s XIV Cherry Festival, with an exhibition of the different varieties of cherries, stalls set up in the village square, and the most awaitied part of the day is the giant paella lunch for up to 1,000 people, which attracts the locals from Miravet and surrounding villages.

It’s a great way to get involved in the local tradition and have lunch with local familias on large shared tables. Tickets can be bought from the village town hall and local shops approximately 1 month in advance for a cost of around 8,00€ per person, which includes paella, wine, water, bread, cherries, dessert, and a taste of local cherry tart! You can also take away with you the ceramic paella dish made in one of the village pottery Workshops. There is entertainment and dancing throughout the day and in the evening……..you can even like to try your luck in the annual competition to see who can spit out a cherry stone the furthest distance!

The village and surrounding countryside is packed with fruit orchards which are bursting with peaches, apricots and plums throughout the spring and summer months. The village is overlooked by the imposing cliff-top 11th Century Templar castle of Miravet, with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the beautiful River Ebro from the old quarter of the village and viewing terrace at the top of the castle.
