Casa Tío Juan is set in the heart of these most fantastic undiscovered mountains of Central Spain only 2 hours from Madrid and Vallodolid both of which are served by airlines from the UK.

Gredos Regional Park covers an area of 87,717 hectares, with only one access road which means that walkers are able, very easily, to get away from it all. The road to the Plataforma leaves the village of Hoyos del Espino making Casa Tío Juan the favourite place to enjoy a holiday in Gredos.

For walkers we can provide map packs and suggestions for those who like to be independent, or accompany walkers who prefer.

The Gredos mountains, part of the Sistema Central, run for 143kms Northeast to Southwest, were formed over 40 million years ago, mainly of granite with wonderful glacial cirques, mountain rivers and waterfalls, tarns and alpine meadows which abound with flowers through spring and summer. The Northern valley with the main river Tormes is at a height of app. 1500m (Hoyos del Espino) making easy access to the high peaks (up to 2592 m) and meadows. The Southern face drops dramatically 2000m to the Tietar valley with fantastic views, and rocky stacks and aretes for climbing.

The botanist, birdwatcher and general nature lover will find many species in Gredos that are not found in the UK, (eg. birds of prey, the bluethroat, many plants), and some that are unique to the area, 14 plant species, the ibex and salamander. The many rivers offer lovely spots for bathing and picnicking.

The weather is generally reliable and the 2 distinct faces and the orientation of Gredos make it a very safe area for walking. Other activities on offer in the area can be organised through local groups.

Casa Tío Juan is an old village house that has been carefully renovated with the active holiday maker in mind, perfect for a group of 12 and cosy enough for a couple. There is a boot and coat room for all those rucksacks etc. with drying facilities; a very spacious living/dining room with open fire, perfect for evenings together after a hard day; laundry room, wood store, and well-equipped large kitchen.

The bedrooms on the first floor open off a lovely central hall with open beams and velux for light. We offer an alternative walking holiday with more independence and no packing up for transfers. For those preferring not to cater for themselves the village has many bars and restaurants and eating out in Spain is still cheap. For example, a lunch time “menu del día” for about €9 (GBP 6) includes starter, main course and desert/coffee, with wine!

There is a baker near the house, and a food shop just opposite, where goodies can be bought for sustenance on your walks or other activities.

Within reach are 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the wonderful cities of Ávila, Salamanca, Toledo, Segovia, El Escorial, Caceres and Guadalupe.
