The Yellow Ophrys or Yellow Bee Orchid has an easily recognised concave yellow lip, divided into three lobes. This wide yellow border surrounds a dark brown / red central area that may have a bluish hue. The two small upright petals may be yellow to green nestled within the three pale green sepals. These can be found in areas of full sun to partial shade on alkaline soils, sometimes creating large communities. It will grow in pastures, garrigue, scrubland and woodland clearings up to an altitude of 1800m. Synonym: Ophrys vespifera These images of orchids were taken in Southern Spain, many terrestrial species are widespread from the Iberian peninsular eastwards through the Mediterranean region.
