Wide-leaved Iris Height: 20cm Colour: Blue Family: Iridaceae = Iris This very short stemmed iris can often turn drab winter banks into carpets of blue from January to March. The flowers are mostly a striking pale blue with the occasional dark blue or white individual within a large group. The flower head is divided into three equal parts each with a bright yellow crest on the down curved petals, sometimes surrounded by white and an attractive darker blue mottling. The leaves are distinctive in being set on only two sides, they are long and tapered, sometimes curved. The under-side is silvery, giving them a two tone colouring as they fold upwards in a v shape. This will be less obvious if the bulbs are clustered tightly together forming a natural group. It is a bulbous plant that can be found on rocky hillsides, in fields and on banks in Portugal and southern Spain.
