The Alcornocales, Sierra de Grazalema and Sierra de las Nieves are superb nature parks in the mountains of western Andalusia. Not far away from some of the classic beach resorts of the Costa del Sol, they boast an unexpected natural wealth. Western winds provide the Mediterranean landscape with enough rain to create green valleys with murmuring creeks and dense, evergreen forests. The upper regions are bare and rocky with dramatic cliffs and deep caves.

These mountain slopes host a flora that ranks among the richest of entire Europe. It is also the land of the Iberian ibex, the griffon vulture and a twice-a-year tidal wave of migratory birds flying back and forth between Europe and Africa. Numerous mountain trails depart from picturesque towns and villages. They will lead you through vast forests, desert-like rock slopes, dramatic canyons and flowery orchards.

This nature guide is part of a series of innovative guides for nature enthusiasts. The Crossbill Guides combine interesting and insightful accounts with up-to-date and practical tourist information and observation tips. Detailed descriptions of hiking trails and car routes are conveniently linked to information on everything you want to know about the what's, where's and whys of the splendid nature of the Sierras of western Andalusia.

Finca al-manzil

Finca al-manzil is in the stunning Sierra de Montanchez, Extremadura, Spain...A traditional cortijo and barn set in 20 hectares of natural woodland, within 40kms of 3 world heritage towns.

Finca al-manzil is special because it is secluded from other houses and people, although not remote, in a world of its own, independent, entirely run on solar power and with mountain water from a deep bore hole.

Very comfortable accommodation with beautiful views of the mountain peaks and over the olive groves. Great riding and walking country with tracks straight from the finca. A lovely pool set into the rocks of the mountain. Everything to make a comfortable and interesting holiday.

Posada Rincon de Alardos
The Posada is on the Southern side of the Sierra de Gredos mountains in Castilla y Leon in Spain where many activities are offered.

Walking, hiking, birdwatching holidays or just enjoying nature in general. In summer, swimming in the naturally formed rock pools of the many rivers is an absolute pleasure.

This privileged area of Candeleda and the Valle de la Vera enjoy a special climate that favours the growth of Mediterranean plants such as palms, bougainvilleas, kiwis, etc. It is also one of the principal tobacco growing areas in Europe.

All this with the backdrop of the Sierra de Gredos peaks which are covered in snow in the Winter months.

Birds such as bee eaters, red kites, storks, hoopoes and owls are commonly seen at the Posada, and many more can be found in the surrounding area, such as water foul at the Rosarito reservoir only a fifteen minute drive away.
