Full Description:
“June 15th 7.30 am and the morning dog walk...and what do I spy, but a large family of wild boar, taking leisurely refreshment from a stream running down from the mountains. There is time for a photo but I have no camera today. Still, what a special moment to remember”. Carol Haizelden Casa Jenny is situated in Campo Cebas (1100m), a small picturesque hamlet above Castril de la Pena. Olives and almond groves abound here, in neat rows of two tone green. Goats and sheep spring along on their daily walks to pastures new, barely needing the guidance of the shepherd and his sheepdogs. Such excitement to get out for a stroll! Wild herbs and flowers push their way out of banks and rocks. Such a riot of colour in the Spring. Campo Cebas sits equally betwixt Embalse de Portillo and Embalse de Bolera. Travel 10 minutes either way from C.C. for the chance to enjoy either of these lakes in solitude. A little further afield there is also San Clemente and the huge Negratin, some 14 K long. One can enjoy a swim in the waters of any of these lakes, and even a Naturist Beach on Negratin at Cuevas del Campo! Castril de la Pena is a well known pretty white village which sits in a valley beneath Embalse de Portillo. In the lower Castril valley one can venture along the “Rope Walk” as follows! Follow the Rio de Castril downstream, take the wooden walkway attached to the rockface overhanging the river, then cross the river over the swinging bridge! Go even further downstream and walk through endless olive groves. Walking through the village to the church one can then take the windy path up to the top of La Pena overlooking the village, and enjoy the far reaching vistas from this viewpoint. This area is part of the Baza-Huescar Altiplano or High Plain. There is an amazing mixture of landscapes here. Craggy mountains, clear blue lakes, flat plains, and the weird and wonderful cone shaped hills of cave country near Huescar. History and archaeology abounds here, as we claim the title of “Primero Pobladores de Europa” dating from the Bronze age. Galera and Orce each have a museum, and Galera the “Yacimiento” or ruins of Bronze Age settlement on a hilltop just outside the village. Travel into Jaen Province from Casa Jenny and one is offered the delights of Quesada (40 mins)and Cazorla (1hr). Jaen has the largest harvest of Olives in Spain, and this drive offers plentiful evidence. Quesada has streets of tall white townhouses, laden with flowers and competing for the honour of a ceramic plaque stating “Primero Calle Ano ¿?” or prettiest street that year. Cazorla town nestles beneath the mountains in the Parque Natural and is a center for all things outdoor. Many species of wildlife, flora and fauna are protected here. One notices though that this is a busier place by comparison to Castril and surrounds. Casa Jenny is a comfortable newly built cortijo offering one double and one twin bedroom each with private en suite, and a private reading area leading off them. We have a cosy lounge / dining room just for guests use, with TV, DVD and CD , games and books. The large terrace takes in the wonderful views across far reaching valleys and surrounding mountains, where one can enjoy the golden glow of sunrise and multi coloured hues of sunset.
