Introduction: Set in a matchless position amongst the Pyrenees of Catalonia, Casa Guilla (parts of which are almost 1000 years old) is the ideal place for those interested in birds, butterflies, plants and outdoor pursuits. This rural guest house is rustic but comfort, food and hospitality are all there in abundance.
Full Description: Casa Guilla has been described as an ‘eyrie’; high in the clouds overlooking the valley of Tremp with spectacular views of lakes, fields, vineyards and villages. The birds of prey are always there, sometimes beneath, sometimes above and often very close. The wide variety of soils and plants in the area also guarantee a wealth of butterflies and moths, some of which are extremely rare in other parts of Europe. The house itself started out as part of a medieval fortification and over the centuries has evolved into a farmhouse and now a guesthouse, complete with a uniquely situated pool. Animal pens and granaries have been transformed into guest accommodation. We have tried to keep as much as possible of what was here before in order to retain the original rusticity, which we feel is part of the charm in these old stone buildings. The atmosphere is relaxed and luxuries are simple but plentiful. Our overriding aim is to offer value for money. As we are twelve kilometres from the nearest town our prices include a continental breakfast and a full evening meal. We serve hearty European country meals consisting of a soup, a first course, a main course, dessert with wine and coffee and brandy included. All guests eat together at the same table at 8.30 pm. We do not serve lunch but we can prepare packed lunches with filled baguettes or sandwiches. Casa Guilla is conveniently situated for daily excursions to the Montsec ridge and the Balaguer/Lleida plains to the south and the high Pyrenees and National Park of Aiguestortes and Lake Sant Maurici to the north. Among the many interesting excursions that can be undertaken from Casa Guilla there is the dramatic Mont Rebei gorge that separates Catalonia and Aragon, the numerous sites of prehistoric cave paintings, the UNESCO World Heritage Romanesque churches in the Boi Valley, vinyard tours, Mur castle, etc. to name but a few. The area is very popular with ornithologists who are able to see a wide range of birds without going too far a field, often no further than Casa Guilla’s terrace that has a panoramic view of the Tremp valley. Of particular interest are the Lammergeier and the Wallcreeper. There are also many interesting birding sites within easy reach of Casa Guilla, they are: The National Park of Aigüestortes and the Lake of Sant Maurici It is possible to see a wide range of butterflies in the many habitats within easy reach of Casa Guilla. A list of butterflies seen in the area is available on the Casa Guilla website and contains over 190 species. Lists of butterflies seen by location and month are also available to guests on arrival so that excursions to diverse habitats can be planned. During the spring and summer months, and weather permitting, it is possible to see over 100 different species within a week. The local climate is mainly Mediterranean but is mixed with both Alpine and Atlantic. Lists of plants growing in the area are available on the Casa Guilla website. Unfortunately these only list a fraction of what is actually growing here.
